Please Explain podcast: Why is the government investigating Australia Post?

Yesterday, Christine Holgate was forced to stand aside from her position as head of Australia Post after the federal government ordered an investigation into the purchase of $12,000 worth of luxury watches for senior employees.

The scandal is the latest in a string of controversies that have occurred during Ms. Holgate’s three-year tenure as chief executive.

These include revelations she spent around $300,000 on corporate credit cards and chauffeur-driven cars in 12 months and paid a reputation management firm $119,000 for just 38 days of work between June and July.

Earlier in the year, Ms. Holgate threatened to call the police on the City of Melbourne unless they allowed a bizarre delivery of stubby holders from Senator Pauline Hanson to residents of a locked-down public housing tower in Melbourne.
